In Hindu thought, OM is considered the primordial sound from which the universe arose, and it is often said to contain all sounds and all mantras. Its three parts are traditionally linked to creation (A), preservation (U) and dissolution (M), associated with the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. They also represent the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Chanted at the beginning and end of prayers and yoga practice, it is a symbol of the infinite.
