This large lapis lazuli om charm brings a sacred symbol to life in deep blue stone. Our artisans handcraft it in solid 950 sterling silver with inlaid lapis lazuli. It measures 0.9″ L x 0.6″ W, and the chain or cord, if you choose to add one, measures 18.5″ L.

What the OM symbol means

In Hindu tradition, OM (AUM) is the sound through which the universe came into being. Many understand it as all sounds, all vibrations and all mantras together. It is also seen as the sound of the infinite and as Brahman itself, the sacred power that sustains the universe.

Beyond sound, the three letters carry layered meanings. A stands for Creation, U for Preservation and M for Destruction. Together, they represent the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Similarly, the three parts relate to waking, dreaming and deep sleep, and to the three gunas: rajas, sattva and tamas.

In addition, the letters point to three planes of existence: heaven (swarga), earth (martya) and the netherworld (patala). Tradition holds that AUM can represent every word the human voice produces, because A comes from the throat and U and M from the lips. Finally, in the Vedas, AUM is the sound of the Sun and of Light.
