A Medal of Grace
The Miraculous Medal is a powerful symbol of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, inspired by a vision experienced by Saint Catherine Labouré in 1830 in Paris, France. It is a visible sign of faith and trust in Mary’s intercession, worn by millions around the world.
A Vision from Heaven
On November 27, 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity. Mary stood upon a globe, rays of light shining from her hands. Surrounding her were the words:
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Mary instructed:
“Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces.”
The first medals were distributed in 1832—and miracles of healing and conversion quickly followed, earning it the title: The Miraculous Medal.
