Superior quality lapis lazuli pigment is the most commonly used of our pigment grades. Ground from natural lapis lazuli, it has a 55 to 60% lazurite content, the mineral responsible for the stone’s celebrated blue. It is sold by the kilogram (2.2 lb).
For centuries, lapis lazuli was the source of true ultramarine, the deep blue that Renaissance painters prized above almost every other colour. A higher lazurite content gives a richer, more saturated tone, and this middle grade offers a well-balanced choice for many painting, restoration and craft projects.
Artists, conservators and makers choose this grade when they want a dependable, versatile natural blue that sits between our standard and premium pigments. Combine it with your binder of choice to create paints, washes and lacquers, and enjoy working with a material that carries thousands of years of history.
All our lapis lazuli is of exceptional grade and completely natural. We are one of the few jewelers who never use synthetic stones and never dye our lapis to mask poor quality – practices that are all too common, as much of the lapis lazuli sold today is dyed, reconstituted or imitation stone. That is our difference.
