Our standard quality lapis lazuli pigment is a fine natural blue powder from genuine lapis lazuli stone. It has a lazurite content of 40-45%. Lazurite is the blue mineral that gives lapis its color, so this grade produces light blue paints and lacquers.
Lapis lazuli has a remarkable history as a color. Renaissance painters ground the stone into ultramarine, and they often saved it for the most important details. For example, the robes of central figures in many paintings glow with this precious blue. Working with genuine lapis pigment connects artists, restorers and craftspeople with that long tradition.
The standard grade is a good choice when you want softer, lighter blues. It also suits larger projects, such as decorative lacquer work or experimental painting. Mix the powder with your preferred binder to make your own paints and finishes. Because it is a natural pigment, small variations in tone are part of its character.
We sell this standard quality lapis lazuli pigment by the kilogram (2.2 lb). If you need a deeper tone, compare it with our higher grades. Then you can find the depth of blue that suits your work best. A full kilogram also leaves plenty of powder for testing different binders and ratios.
All our lapis lazuli is of exceptional grade and completely natural. We are one of the few jewelers who never use synthetic stones and never dye our lapis to mask poor quality – practices that are all too common, as much of the lapis lazuli sold today is dyed, reconstituted or imitation stone. That is our difference.
